My Story

Harpreet Singh Toor has been a community leader who gets things done for more than 30 years. Working closely with elected officials, law enforcement, and government agencies Harpreet has helped thousands of citizens realize the benefits and services they are entitled to.

Unlike his opponent, who has never passed a piece of legislation that he introduced, Harpreet has gotten proven results. In 2019 he was instrumental in securing passage in the State Assembly and the State Senate of the Religious Garb Bill, an amendment to the State Human Rights Law. Working closely with Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu and Sikh leaders, along with elected officials, Harpreet led a campaign to legally bar discrimination in the workplace based on the wearing of religious attire of any sort.

As someone who struggled to pay the steep medical bills associated with his late wife’s 11-year-long struggles with multiple bouts of cancer, Harpreet Toor understands the need for, and advocates for, government assistance with physical and mental health.

A strong proponent for decades of primary and secondary education, Harpreet has secured funding at the University level for the creation of Sikh studies and language classes, and has worked with the public schools in developing new curriculum, and taught elementary students about the Sikh values of tolerance, acceptance, the love of education and the pursuit of the American Dream.

Harpreet’s image has been used by New York to promote diversity and learning. The MTA posted his photograph on the outsides of the City’s bus fleet in a campaign to promote teaching English as a second language. He also served as advisor to Sir Ben Kingsley in the lead role as a Punjabi taxi cab driver in the 2014 Hollywood film, Learning to Drive, was the only South Asian featured in New York Magazine’s 50th Anniversary Edition feature, 50 New Yorkers who have made a difference, and his image appeared in the opening exhibit of the new Fotografiska Museum in NYC.

Harpreet Singh Toor pledges to bring his many years of active, dedicated, creative and committed community service to NYS Assembly District 17, and to improve the lives of each and every resident.
